Asal usul nama Toto

Menurut mitos yang populer tentang asal usul nama band mereka, Jeff Porcaro, sang drummer menulis kata Toto pada pita demo berisi lagu-lagu mereka agar tidak tertukar dengan pita demo dari grup musik lain. Kabar burung mengatakan nama Toto berasal dari Toteaux. Setelah melihat tulisan Toto pada pita demo, David Hungate (bassist), menjelaskan kepada teman-temannya bahwa kata Toto dalam bahasa Latin berarti memasukkan segala. Mengingat mereka pernah main untuk berbagai rekaman dan berbagai irama musik, para anggota sepakat untuk memakai nama Toto. Nama band mereka sempat memancing tawa ketika pertama kali tur ke Jepang karena TOTO adalah merek produk saniter Jepang. Toto adalah juga nama anjing Dorothy dalam buku-buku The Wonderful Wizard of Oz dan film klasik film produksi tahun 1939.

Setelah beredar, album perdana Toto melesat di tangga album berkat lagu-lagu seperti "Hold the Line" ,"Georgy Porgy", dan "I'll Supply The Love". Toto langsung mendapat pengakuan internasional, dan dinominasikan sebagai penerima Grammy untuk Artis Pendatang Baru Terbaik. Tidak lama kemudian, pada awal 1979, Toto memulai tur keliling Amerika untuk mempromosikan album perdana mereka. Semasa tur, mereka mengajak dua musisi tambahan, Tom Kelly (gitar, vokal latar) dan Lenny Castro (perkusi). Sejak itu pula Toto selalu mengajak musisi tambahan sewaktu mengadakan konser.
